Review:
The album that probably first put Laibach on the world music map. It remains controversial with strong quasi fascist overtones. A powerful rendition of Opus's 'Life Is Live' kicks the jaunty, Europop anthem into Wagnerian territory. This popular song, with a strong message about 'the feeling of the people ... the feeling of the land', must have played a part in Slovenia breaking away from Yugoslavia.

Queen's 'One Vision' is darker and much more aggressively dramatic in Laibach's version 'Geburt Einer Nation'. Laibach really bring to the fore the fascism in the original lyrics.

A number of other tracks stand out on the album There is a song, 'How The West Was Won', which seems to glorify the practise of Freemasonry. Another track 'Trans-National' has the rhythmic momentum of a fast moving train. 'The Great Seal' has a rendition of Winston Churchill's 'we shall never surrender' speech whilst 'F.I.A.T' contains a WW2 propaganda warning originally broadcast by controversial poet Ezra Pound.

I believe that not until 'NATO' did Laibach find the same kind of spirit of purpose, and manage to distil it into a cohesive semi-commercial album. All the tracks on this album are interesting, and listenable. It is the album that no Laibach fan should be without.

Worth Buying?
Yes! If you do not have this album then you must buy it as soon as possible. It is a classic album in every sense of the word, and presents Laibach/NSK in a form that reaches even the most sated western consumerist sensibilities.
