'Mama Leone' was a big hit for
Italian singer,
Bino, in 1978. Although a French version, with
different lyrics, was sung by
Nana Mouskouri, it is the
Bino
version, with lyrics by
schlager legend
Drafi Deutscher, that was covered so
successfully by Laibach in 2004.
Laibach have realised 'Mama Leone' as a big production number
with classic orchestration and female voice accompaniment to
Milan Fras' almost whispered gravel tones (Milan wisely avoids
the high notes). The message of the
poor mother suffering to make her children's world a brighter
place seems intact, and might even bring a tear to the eye. Ivan
Novak has described 'Mama Leone' as a Christmas song in an
interview for
'The Slovenian'.
